Alfa Laval showed its commitment to circular economy at Circular Initiative 2023

Alfa Laval demonstrated its commitment to the circular economy at the Circular Initiative 2023 with the theme "Accelerating scaling-up through partnerships across the value chain”. This presentation was made by Madeleine Gilborne, our Head of Technologies & VP Energy Division, and Anna Celsing, Chief Sustainability Officer.

The event, which convened leaders dedicated to advancing a circular economy, was held at Münchenbryggeriet in Stockholm, Sweden, with more than 250 in-person attendees. Additionally, the event was streamed online, engaging over 1,900 participants from around 12 countries. This year marked Alfa Laval's third year of involvement, reinforcing their steady commitment to sustainability and innovation.

During the Circular Initiative 2023, Alfa Laval highlighted its 'Re-Made to matter' program, launched in partnership with Stena Recycling — a Swedish company specializing in sustainable waste management and recycling services. This program aligns with Alfa Laval’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint, targeting carbon neutrality by 2030. Recognizing the importance of collaborative innovation, Alfa Laval has established significant partnerships, including one with SSAB, a Nordic and US-based steel company. This collaboration focuses on creating recyclable, fossil-free steel heat exchangers, showcasing Alfa Laval's active role in pioneering sustainable industry solutions.

Voices from Circular Initiative 2023

On scaling circular initiatives

“Study after study has shown a massive value potential in the circular economy to the tune of trillions of dollars worldwide. There is a huge opportunity for the ones that dare to take the first steps because the field is open.”
Mats Linder, CEO of Stena Circular Recycling

On circular economy in action

“The line between what is waste and what is product is disappearing. Waste for one company can be a raw material for another company or actually a product.”
Ulrika Molander, COO of GreenIron.

On partnerships as catalysts

”It’s an inspiration., So it’s always so interesting to see the other companies that Stena is working with, learning what they’re doing, picking up ideas, and challenging ourselves. So why don’t we try that and different things that we can do.”
Vanessa Butani, Vice President of Sustainability Electrolux Group

Alfa Laval's participation in Circular Initiative 2023 reaffirms our role as a thought leader in the journey toward a circular economy. By sharing insights, forging partnerships, and demonstrating real-world solutions, we are actively contributing to a more sustainable and circular future.

“Our main learning has been that you need strong partnerships across value chains to make an impact and create circular business models. And we have also learned that it takes time to change customer behaviors, and that’s why it’s so important that we act now,” says Madeleine Gilborne, Head of Technologies & VP Energy Division at Alfa Laval.
